The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It categories language ability into three broad categories; Basic Users, Independent Users and Proficient Users. These broad categories are broken down further to a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language.<\/p>\n

Why is it useful to understand your CEFR level? The CEFR level you get in a English test<\/a> or exam is an indicator of your language ability and you may need a CEFR certificate for employment, University admission, school admission or as a mandatory part of your college course.<\/p>\n

A0<\/h2>\n
Pre-beginner<\/h3>\n
There is no A0 CEFR level, at Klik2learn we use A0 to describe a learner who:<\/p>\n

- Has no prior knowledge of English<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Pre-beginners can take the Journey 2 Basic Skills course to enable them to function at an elementary level-A1 on the CEFR framework.<\/p>\n

A1<\/h2>\n
Beginner<\/h3>\n
At the A1 CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n
\n
- Understand and use familiar expressions and very basic phrases aimed at meeting your everyday needs.<\/li>\n
- Introduce yourself to others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know and things you have. you can interact in a simple way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
A2<\/h2>\n
Elementary English<\/h3>\n
At the A2 CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n
\n
- Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.<\/li>\n
- Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.<\/li>\n
- Describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
B1<\/h2>\n
Intermediate English<\/h3>\n
At the B1 CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n
\n
- Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure.<\/li>\n
- Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.<\/li>\n
- Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.<\/li>\n
- Describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
B2<\/h2>\n
Upper Intermediate English<\/h3>\n
At the B2 CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n
\n
- Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation.<\/li>\n
- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.<\/li>\n
- Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
\u25ba Journey 2 English (Intermediate to Upper Intermediate English)<\/a><\/h3>\n
C1<\/h2>\n
Advanced English<\/h3>\n
At the C1 CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n

- Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.<\/li>\n
- Express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.<\/li>\n
- Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
C1+<\/h2>\n
Proficiency<\/h3>\n
At the C1+ CEFR level, a language learner can:<\/p>\n
\n
- Understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.<\/li>\n
- Summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.<\/li>\n
- Express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning, even in the most complex situations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
