Placed in the category for Digital Innovation, Journey 2 Basic Skills is a new digital course for non-native speakers of English with low literacy, numeracy and digital skills.

Klik2learn CEO, Ann Attridge said,

“Our goal is to help people with no English skills at all. To do this we had to overcome a number of challenges. Firstly, the course overcomes language barriers by using animations, symbols and graphics. Secondly, it is accessible on any device. Thirdly, it encourages users to complete the course with engaging game rewards that motivate them to continue.

For example, instead of English instructions we use animations to help users get to the next step. Games, iconography, graphics, adaptive learning and animation are all part of the app and help learners progress through the course.

The creation of an app for this hard to reach audience has been a team effort. We’ve enjoyed English as a Second Language (ESOL) expertise on content from City of Glasgow College and support from the UFI VocTech Trust.

We’re delighted to be in the finals because the ELTons are recognised as the ‘Oscars’ of the English Language learning world. With 130 entries from over 40 countries, we are flying the flag for Scotland’s EdTech sector.”

About Journey 2 Basic Skills

Journey 2 Basic Skills is a fully interactive English language online course for pre-beginners. In other words, our users will have little to no knowledge of the English alphabet or spoken English. Consequently, we had to think creatively to devise a course in an app that was fun, engaging and motivational. It aligns to A0-A1, the first level of English, in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) written by the Council of Europe.
